Biography
Miguel Reyes-Múgica, MD is a distinguished Clinical Professor and internationally recognized expert in Pediatric and Perinatal Pathology. He currently serves as Chief of the Pediatric and Perinatal Pathology Division and holds several key administrative leadership roles.
Dr. Reyes-Múgica earned his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He trained in pathology under the mentorship of Dr. Ruy Pérez-Tamayo in Mexico, followed by subspecialty training in Pediatric Pathology at the National Institute of Pediatrics in Mexico City, where he later served as an attending physician for four years. He continued his advanced training as a Research Fellow and subsequently a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Pathology under Dr. Francisco González-Crussí at Children’s Memorial Hospital (now Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago), affiliated with Northwestern University.
Board-certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology by the American Board of Pathology, Dr. Reyes-Múgica has over three decades of experience in the field. He was Professor of Pathology and Pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine from 1994 to 2008, where he founded and directed the Yale Pediatric & Developmental Pathology Program. From 2008 to 2024 he served as Tenured Professor of Pathology at the university of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Chair of the Department of Pathology, and Head of Laboratories at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. During that period, he held the Marjory K. Harmer Endowed Chair for research in Pediatric Pathology. He served as Expert Editor for the WHO Classification of Paediatric Tumours, 5th. Series. Since September of 2023, he serves as a standing member of the WHO Blue Books Editorial Board.
His research and diagnostic expertise focus on neural crest disorders—including congenital melanocytic lesions, Hirschsprung disease, and neuroblastoma—as well as testicular pathology, disorders of sex development, and germ cell tumors. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications (ORCID: 0000-0001-5698-3702) and two books, and has delivered more than 160 invited national and international lectures.
Dr. Reyes-Múgica is a past President of the Society for Pediatric Pathology (2017–2018) and the International Paediatric Pathology Association (2018–2020). Since 2020, he has served as the Paediatric Tumours Dataset Champion for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR). He is also a member of the Immature Teratoma Consensus Group "MaGIC" (@MaGIC_GCT), and holds active memberships in the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the Latin American Society for Pediatric Pathology (SLAPPE), and several other academic societies.
Since 2021, he has served as International Professor of Anatomic Pathology at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. -
