Biography
Dr. Michalis F. (Mike) Georgiou is Professor of Clinical Radiology in the Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was promoted to the rank of Professor in June 2025. He also holds a joint appointment in Biomedical Engineering and serves on the faculty of the CAMPEP-accredited Graduate Medical Physics Program.
Dr. Georgiou earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, cum laude with general honors, from the University of Miami, followed by a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, also at the University of Miami. He further completed the University of Miami’s Medical Physics Certificate Program in 2018. He is board-certified by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine in Physics and Instrumentation and licensed as a Medical Nuclear Radiological Physicist in the State of Florida.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Georgiou has held a series of progressive leadership roles in the Department of Radiology. Most notably, he served as Division Director of Nuclear Medicine from 2018 to 2024, overseeing clinical, research, and educational activities across UHealth, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and satellite facilities. He previously served as Interim Division Director in 2016–2017 and 2017–2018, and earlier as Director of Nuclear Medicine Physics and Instrumentation. In 2025, he transitioned to his current leadership role as Director of Medical Nuclear Physics, Quality and Safety.
Dr. Georgiou is an internationally recognized scholar in nuclear medicine, PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and theranostics. His work has advanced quantitative imaging, machine learning applications, and dosimetry optimization for targeted radionuclide therapy. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in journals such as International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Applied Sciences, Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Cancers, and has presented widely at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
His research portfolio includes NIH- and industry-funded projects on Alzheimer’s disease imaging, gastric emptying scintigraphy, and radionuclide therapies for neuroendocrine tumors, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. He is also co-inventor of a patented respiratory gating device for PET lung cancer imaging.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Georgiou trains medical physics students, residents, and fellows in advanced imaging science and quantitative analysis. He also contributes nationally through service as a reviewer and subcommittee member for the American College of Radiology and the AAPM.
At the University of Miami, Dr. Georgiou continues to advance nuclear medicine through leadership in clinical physics, commitment to innovation, and dedication to multidisciplinary collaboration in cancer and neurodegenerative disease imaging. -
