Biography
Dr. Toborek is the Miller Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Toborek is double Doctor Honoris causa by the Silesian Medical University and the Academy of Physical Education in his native Poland. He is proud to be an alumnus of the SRP, as he was supported by the University of Kentucky (UK) SRP grant as a postdoctoral scholar and published the initial critical findings on endothelial toxicity of PCB congeners. Since then, he has advanced to full professor and Vice-Chair for Research, initially at UK, and then at the University of Miami. Dr. Toborek was a Project Leader and also a Core Leader of the Research Core at the UK-SRP through two funding cycles. Dr. Toborek is very experienced in environmental research and has published numerous papers on the various health effects of environmental toxicants. Dr. Toborek has received several national and international awards for his research in vascular biology, including the 2014 Wybran Award from the Society of NeuroImmune Pharmacology (SNIP), which is the highest honor bestowed by the SNIP in recognition of scientific contributions, the Excellence in Research Award from the American Heart Association, the Anafred N. Halpern Award from the American College of Nutrition, and twice the International Alexander von Humboldt Research Award. One of his research papers on the vascular effects of nanomaterials (Commonly Manufactured Nanomaterials Induces Neurovascular Toxicity) was selected for the SRP Research Briefs, and his paper on the impact of exercise on PCB-induced alterations of the gut microbiota (3) was featured as the Science Selection by the EHP. His credentials also include serving on numerous national and international posts, including editorial boards and study sections. He is a founding member of the International Brain Barriers Society and a member of the Scientific Council for the International Symposia on Signaling at the Blood-Brain Barriers. His national leadership recognition is highlighted by chairing numerous NIH study sections (including the NeuroAIDS and other End-organ Diseases for two years) and presidency of SNIP. He served on the Executive Committees of SNIP and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Society for Personalized Nanomedicine. Dr. Toborek is consistently ranked by the NIH in the top 3-5% of all biochemist investigators, which attests to the quality of his research. -
