Mercedes Prudencio, PhD

Dr. Prudencio grew up in Spain where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and then emigrated to the USA and obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences-Neuroscience at the University of Florida. Under the guidance of Dr. David Borchelt, her PhD work focused on animal models and protein aggregation of SOD1-ALS. She then continued towards her postdoctoral training at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida, working with Dr. Leonard Petrucelli, and developed skills on transcriptomics and biomarker development.

Dr. Prudencio enjoy mentoring students in the areas of neurdegeneration and RNA.

The Prudencio Laboratory is focused on studying the role of TDP-43, with particular interest in understanding how its contributions differ across neurodegenerative diseases, as well as its interactions with other co-pathologies. Ultimately, the goal of the Prudencio lab is to find novel targets for therapeutic intervention and/or biomarker development.
