Biography
Dr. Matthew Alfonso joined the faculty of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in July 2025 as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology, with a clinical focus in breast imaging. He holds hospital appointments across the University of Miami Health System, including Jackson Memorial Medical Center, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and University of Miami Hospital, where he provides expert interpretation and patient-centered imaging care.
A Miami native, Dr. Alfonso completed his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University before earning his medical degree from the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He went on to complete a transitional year at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System. To further refine his expertise, he completed a fellowship in Breast Imaging at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System, where he trained in advanced mammography, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, and MRI techniques for the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease.
Dr. Alfonso’s research interests span breast imaging, musculoskeletal interventions, and neuroradiology. He has co-authored peer-reviewed publications in the American Journal of Neuroradiology and the Biomedical Journal of Scientific and Technical Research, contributing case studies and technical reports that inform clinical practice. His early scholarly work also included presentations at national and international scientific meetings, including the Pediatric Academic Society, where he presented on EEG source localization in neonates.
Beyond his clinical and academic work, Dr. Alfonso has demonstrated a strong commitment to education and community engagement. As a medical student, he served as an editor of the Eloquor Medical Arts Journal at FIU, promoting the integration of humanities into medical education. He also co-led FIU’s “Start the Conversation” palliative care initiative and served as a mentor with the NeighborhoodHELP STEM Saturday Program, introducing underserved youth to careers in science and medicine.
Dr. Alfonso is a member of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, and the American Board of Radiology. His professional mission is to integrate compassionate, evidence-based care with innovations in breast imaging to improve early detection and outcomes for patients.
At the University of Miami, he is dedicated to advancing clinical excellence in breast imaging while also mentoring residents and fellows, contributing to the academic mission of the Department of Radiology, and fostering a patient-centered approach to breast health across the health system. -
