Biography
Native of New Jersey, Dr. Mark Buzzelli is a dual Board Certified surgeon in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He recently completed thirteen years of active duty service with the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon. He comes to the University of Miami (UM) as full-time faculty after serving for the past seven years in a military-civilian partnership position at UM Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Health System's Ryder Trauma Center. During that time, he was the Director of the Army Trauma Training Center and a Voluntary Assistant Professor of Surgery at UM. He is a subject matter expert in deployed combat casualty care and he will continue his military service as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Rising to the rank of Colonel, Dr. Buzzelli has multiple combat deployments to include service with the 8th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment (FRSD) in Afghanistan (2011-2012), JSOC (2013-2017), 10th Field Hospital in Iraq (2018), and 936th FRSD in Afghanistan (2021). -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Buzzelli graduated from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA) with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1996. In 1999, he obtained his Master Degree in Medical Science from Boston University School of Medicine (Boston, MA). He completed his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 2003 from Boston University School of Medicine. His graduate medical education included General Surgery Residency training, a two-year NIH-sponsored Trauma Research Fellowship, and Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care, which was all completed at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine / Penn State Health - Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (Hershey, PA) between 2003-2011.
Dr. Buzzelli is a Senior Army Instructor who has taught the Army Trauma Training Course for the past seven years. His approach employs a foundation of evidence-based medicine that is supplemented with both individual and team focused problem-based and simulation-based learning. -
Research Interests
Dr. Buzzelli has research interests focused on military combat casualty care, crisis preparation and management, injury prevention and treatment, and health policy and systems. Additionally, he has interests in adult learning and education. -
