Biography
Dr. Mario F. Zaritzky is an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in pediatric radiology and interventional imaging, with a career that spans more than three decades across Argentina and the United States.
Dr. Zaritzky earned his medical degree from the University of La Plata School of Medicine in Argentina, where he also completed training in pediatric surgery and radiology. He went on to serve in progressive clinical and leadership roles at Sor Maria Ludovica Pediatric Hospital in La Plata, where he became Unit Director of the Radiology Service and played a central role in advancing pediatric diagnostic and interventional imaging. In 2004, he joined the University of Chicago Department of Radiology, where he served for nearly 20 years, rising to the rank of Assistant Professor and earning recognition for his leadership in clinical innovation, research strategy, and residency education.
A hallmark of Dr. Zaritzky’s career has been the development and application of minimally invasive approaches for the treatment of complex pediatric conditions. He is widely known for pioneering the use of magnetic compression anastomosis (“magnamosis”) in the management of esophageal atresia and other gastrointestinal disorders, a groundbreaking technique that has been adopted internationally and significantly advanced outcomes in pediatric surgery. His work has been recognized with major honors, including the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) Industry Innovation Award for the Flourish™ Pediatric Esophageal Atresia device, the Gold Medal of Radiology from FAARDIT, and Argentina’s prestigious Raíces Award for international scientific collaboration.
Dr. Zaritzky has published extensively, authoring and co-authoring more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, numerous book chapters, and multiple abstracts and educational exhibits presented at national and international scientific meetings. His scholarship covers a wide range of pediatric radiology topics, including gastrointestinal imaging, neonatal bowel obstruction, esophageal and pancreatic pathology, and advances in minimally invasive technologies. He has also served as a reviewer, editor, and educator, contributing to the training of medical students, residents, and fellows throughout his career.
An active member of the international radiology community, Dr. Zaritzky has long-standing involvement in the Society for Pediatric Radiology, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe, and the Radiological Society of North America, among others.
At the University of Miami, Dr. Zaritzky continues to bring his expertise and innovative spirit to the Department of Radiology, where he is committed to advancing pediatric imaging, mentoring the next generation of radiologists, and fostering collaborations that bridge radiology, surgery, and device innovation. -
