Biography
Dr. Mario Stevenson is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Director of the Institute of AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases (IAEID), Director of the Global Virus Network, and Co-Director of the Miami Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) at the University of Miami. Prior to 2020, Dr. Stevenson was the David Freelander Chair for AIDS Research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the Director of the Center for AIDS research at that Institution.
He obtained his BSc. (1979) and PhD (1984) in Glasgow, Scotland before becoming a molecular virologist working on the viral etiology of AIDS for over 25 years. Dr. Stevenson has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and his research has provided fundamental insight into the mechanisms regulating HIV replication and disease pathogenesis. Due to his research, Dr. Stevenson received a Merit Award (10 year grant) from the NIH-NIAID.
From 2006-2015 he served as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and is currently a member of the amfAR Board of Trustees. In addition, he is a scientific board member of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and serves on the scientific advisory boards of the Centers for AIDS Research at UC San Diego, Emory University and Case Western Reserve University.
Previous appointments include Chair of the HIV/AIDS Virology Study Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National AIDS Conference (CROI), and acting on the NIH Office of AIDS Research which sets AIDS research directives.
Dr. Stevenson is a recipient of Harvard Medical School’s Shipley Lectureship, the Gertrude Elion award, and Barcelona’s IRSI-Caixa award for accomplishments in AIDS research and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. -
