Biography
Dr. Goggins is a Transplant Nephrologist with over 25 years of experience; She is the Medical Director of the Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program at the Miami Transplant Institute. Dr. Goggins specializes in Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation; her area of expertise is advancing pancreas transplant in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Kidney Disease. Over the last 25 years, she has been involved in Medical Education and held many administrative positions, including Medical Director of the Live Kidney Donor Program, Medical Director of the Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program, and Director of the Transplant nephrology fellowship. More importantly, involved in clinical research within the field of transplantation. She has held the role of Principal Investigator in several multicenter trials as well as investigator-initiated research projects. Most recently, Dr. Goggins developed an interest in the long-term follow-up of former African American Kidney Donors, with different APOL1 risk variants, an interest that is currently supported as part of the multi-institutional collaborative U01 NIH/NIDDK award named APOLLO (APOL1 Long-term Kidney Transplantation Outcomes Network), since 2017, where she has served as a Principal Investigator and as a member of the steering committee, the recruitment subcommittee and the dissemination working group. She also led a parallel investigator-initiated study on “Medical outcomes and genetic influences on Kidney Function in live Kidney donors of African and Hispanic descent and their intended recipients: Role of APOL-1 and socioeconomic factors”. She also has a strong interest in Pancreas Transplantation, we are currently the top program in the country, she participates on clinical research and is active in the Community of Practice within the American Society of Transplantation, with an emphasis on outcomes and advancing opportunities to patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Chronic Kidney Disease. Dr. Goggins is a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation and a member of several Community of Practice. -
