Biography
Dr. Maria Rueda-Lara is the Medical Director of Psycho-Oncology at University of Miami/Sylvester, South Florida’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. She specializes in the co-morbidity and psychiatric manifestations of cancer. At UM, she leads the training of medical students, residents, fellows, as well as psychology practicum students in the field of psycho-oncology. Dr. Maria Rueda-Lara is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami (UM) Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry with an added qualification in the Subspecialty of Consultation-Liaison. She completed her residency training in Psychiatry at Rutgers/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and her fellowship in Consultation Liaison/Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering/Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. She recently became a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and she has given presentations both locally and nationally in her field. Her research interests are neurocognitive symptoms in cancer treatment, delirium, and the psychiatric aspects of bone marrow transplantation. -

Teaching Interests
Learning about the scope of psychiatric practice in the general hospital is essential for trainees and their patients. Consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry), is an exiting subspecialty in Psychiatry. that deals with the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical/surgical illness. My goal when teaching CL Psychiatry is that each student can learn about psychiatric manifestations of medical illnesses can learn about different psychiatric manifestations of medical illness and their treatments and about care for medically ill patients who have psychiatric disorders. -
Research Interests
Neurocognitive side effects from cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation. -Hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) patients, cognition, quality of life, survivorship, Graft versus Host disease, and outcomes in transplants. Associations between prevalent genetic polymorphisms that could plausibly influence treatment-related toxicity and neurocognitive outcomes in Hispanic and Non-Hispanic patients undergoing a stem cell transplantation -Barriers to cancer treatment -
