Biography
Dr. Maria D’Almeida Bastos is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology and Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is a fellowship-trained pediatric radiologist with expertise in cross-sectional imaging of pediatric thoracic, abdominal, and musculoskeletal disease, as well as congenital and hereditary disorders.
Dr. Bastos earned her medical degree from Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. She completed her diagnostic radiology residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, followed by a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She also completed her pediatric internship at Miami Children’s Hospital (now Nicklaus Children’s Hospital). She is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Pediatric Radiology.
Since joining the University of Miami faculty in 2010, Dr. Bastos has held hospital appointments at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, and UHealth Tower. She has also contributed to interdepartmental education and collaboration, receiving recognition as “Most Outstanding Interdepartmental Attending” in Pediatrics in both 2014 and 2016.
Her research contributions include studies on pediatric thoracic disease, congenital anomalies, and gastrointestinal pathology in children. She has co-authored articles in Radiographics, American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, Pediatric Radiology, and Academic Radiology. In addition, she has presented numerous educational exhibits at national meetings such as the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), and the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR), earning multiple merit awards for excellence in design and content.
Dr. Bastos is also actively involved in clinical research related to pediatric hemophilia and coagulation disorders, serving as a co-investigator on multicenter studies evaluating joint arthropathy in children and women with hemophilia. She has collaborated on projects funded by NIH and international hematology organizations.
She is a member of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. She also contributes to the academic community as a reviewer for European Radiology.
Dr. Bastos is qualified as an expert witness in child abuse cases for the State of Florida, reflecting her commitment to patient advocacy and child protection. Her dedication to pediatric imaging, interdepartmental collaboration, and scholarly work underscores her role as a leader in advancing pediatric radiology at the University of Miami. -
