Biography
Dr. Laura Chavez is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Jackson Health System. Dr. Chavez continues to serve as a clinical neonatologist, attending in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Holtz Children’s Hospital and Jackson North Medical Center. She is also the NICU Child Find specialist, collaborating with the Early Steps program to improve the timely referral process and follow-through rates from the NICU to Early Steps. In addition to her clinical duties, Dr. Chavez is involved in academics, teaching pediatric residents, neonatology fellows, and medical students during rounds and through lectures on neonatal and perinatal medicine. Her research interests focus on the neurodevelopmental follow-up of premature infants. She is part of the Post-Vent multicenter study, sponsored by the NIH, at the University of Miami site, investigating neurodevelopmental outcomes in premature infants up to five years of age after discharge from the NICU. -
