Biography
A native of Florida, Dr. Sweeny received her undergraduate education at the University of Florida and her medical education at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. She then went on to complete her Otolaryngology Residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. During that time, she also completed an NIH Research Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed her surgical training with a fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sweeny has authored publications on basic science and translational work related to head and neck oncology behavior and cancer imaging strategies. In addition, she has published on clinical outcomes for patients following head and neck free flap reconstruction as well as clinical outcomes following laryngectomy, salvage surgery for oropharyngeal malignancies, and surgical management for metastatic cutaneous malignancies to the parotid gland.
Dr. Sweeny specializes in the treatment and reconstruction of head and neck cancer. She has expertise in the treatment of malignant tumors of the mouth, throat, larynx, neck, skin and salivary glands. She also specializes in microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects from malignancy and osteoradionecrosis. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Sweeny serves as a clinical mentor and educator for residents and medical students within the field of Otolaryngology and for fellows within the field of Advanced Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction. In addition, she has mentored medical students and residents with clinical research projects focusing on improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer. With her guidance, these projects were developed from an idea to eventual publication, national presentations and research awards. -
Research Interests
As a physician scientist, her long-term goals are to improve survival and quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer through basic science and translational work. Her research interest include investigating the impact of cancer cell metabolism on the tumor microenvironment and immune cell function. -
