Assistant Professor of Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology
Co-leader, Sylvester’s Cancer Metabolism Working Group
Member, The Frost Institute for Chemistry and Molecular Science
Biography
Dr. Kiran Kurmi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. from the Mayo Clinic in 2018 and completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in 2024. His research primarily focuses on cancer metabolism, with a particular emphasis on mitochondrial adaptations in proliferating cells, including both cancer and immune cells. Dr. Kurmi is also a member of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Frost Institute for Chemistry and Molecular Science at the University of Miami.

Research Interests
Proliferative cells, such as cancer cells and activated T cells, constantly rewire their metabolism to meet their evolving demands. In our laboratory, we use liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and bioinformatics tools to detect aberrant metabolites and uncover novel metabolite-protein interactions that drive cellular physiology and growth. By elucidating the biochemical mechanisms of metabolic adaptation at the cellular level, we aim to translate our discoveries into innovative therapeutic strategies.
