Biography
Justin H. Townsend, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and specializes at vitreoretinal diseases and surgical procedures. His primary practice location is in Miami. He treats conditions such as macular degeneration, macula-related disorders, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal complications among others. Dr. Townsend earned his Doctor of Medicine degree with highest honors from the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine, where he developed his professional interest in Ophthalmology. Following his Transitional Medicine Internship at University of Texas (UTMB-Austin), he finished his Ophthalmology Residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami, UHealth System, (UM). He completed his 2-year Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship at Emory University and joined the faculty at Bascom Palmer in 2013.
Dr. Townsend has been author or co-author over 40 peer-reviewed publications and presented abstracts at many national and international conferences. He has edited or co-edited 4 books including: 1) 1st Ed, Manual of Retinal Disease: A Guide to Diagnosis and Management (2016), 2) 4th Ed. Primary Care: A Collaborative Practice (2010). Dr. Townsend serves as the Medical Director of Ophthalmic Imaging and on the Telemedicine Committee within the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Townsend is an active member at 6 nationally and internationally known professional organizations, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology among others.
Dr. Townsend is currently the investigator or co-investigator at 16 multicenter research studies.
Dr. Townsend enjoys community activity when time permits. He traveled to Haiti to assist in acute earthquake relief efforts in 2010 and has participated in the Florida Keys and Homestead health fairs. -
