Biography
Juan Pablo Umaña, M.D. is an internationally recognized leader in cardiovascular surgery, known for his pioneering contributions to aortic and mitral valve repair. He specializes in mitral valve repair, tricuspid valve repair, aortic valve repair, valve-sparing aortic root replacement, Ross procedure, minimally invasive aortic root replacement, minimally invasive aortic valve replacement, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, transcatheter mitral valve repair, aortic dissection and cardiac tumors.
Dr. Umana earned his medical degree at the University of El Rosario in Bogota, Colombia, and completed a research fellowship in liver transplantation in Birmingham, England. He pursued his general surgery training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City and continued his advanced training in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine where he completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency.
Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Umana is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the 21st Century Cardiothoracic Surgery Society, and a member of the Board of the Heart Valve Society. He is also active with the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Umaña established the most extensive aortic and mitral valve repair program in Latin America and founded the Latin-American Cardiovascular Surgery Conference. With more than 150 scientific publications and presentations, Dr. Umaña is a leading voice in global cardiovascular research. He was the co-inventor of the MitraClip™, the first transcatheter mitral valve repair device used in clinical practice today, which allows the mitral valve to be repaired without opening the chest. -

Dr. Umaña is an active researcher who has published dozens of scientific papers and contributed several chapters to medical and surgical textbooks throughout his career. He has been invited to speak at nearly 100 medical conferences around the world, including presentations related to complex procedures such as mitral valve repair for patients with mitral annular disjunction and aortic valve-sparing root replacement with valve reimplantation. -
