Biography
Dr. Fernandez-Castillo, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami's Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Henry Ford Hospital/Wayne State University, followed by a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center. He then completed a Lung Transplant Fellowship at Toronto General Hospital /University of Toronto, the largest and most prestigious Lung Transplant Center in the world, where he joined the team as a Transplant Pulmonologist focusing on medical education and clinical research. Dr. Fernandez Castillo has clinical expertise in all aspects of advanced lung disease and transplant medicine, including recipient selection, optimization, and management of post-transplant complications, as well as advanced therapies like Extra-corporeal Life support (ECLS). He has also participated in clinical research projects on Gastrointestinal complications post-lung transplantation, advancing the understanding of the lung-gut interaction and the association with outcomes in lung transplant recipients. In addition to this clinical expertise, he is an educator and mentor, having had a critical role in training multiple pulmonologists in transplant medicine who now practice in various centers around the globe.
At the University of Miami, he continues to care for patients with advanced lung disease and mentor young physicians to a successful career in lung transplantation. -
