Biography
My journey in medicine has been driven by a profound commitment to serving underserved populations. As an assistant clinical professor at the University of Miami (UM) Hospital and a volunteer physician with Miami Street Medicine, a UM medical student run organization and Doctors Within Borders, a free urgent care clinic, I have dedicated my career to providing comprehensive medical care to those who need it most, particularly individuals battling cancer and other chronic diseases requiring acute care in the hospital.
Working at the University of Miami’s flagship hospital, I encounter firsthand the complex health needs of a diverse populations of Miami residents and visitors, including international patients. Besides my clinical and teaching activities, my research includes epidemiology, quality improvement and implementation science initiatives that include developing protocols to streamline the transition of care from hospital to community clinics for people with opioid use disorder and those experiencing homelessness. Recently, I introduced a Buprenorphine induction protocol at the University of Miami Hospital, and we are monitoring rates of initiation of treatment. This protocol aims to decrease the use of emergency room and hospital resources for patients receiving inadequate care for opioid use disorder, improving access to addiction treatment and aligning with the National Institute of Health’s goal of enhancing healthcare systems for vulnerable populations.
Volunteering has been an incredibly rewarding aspect of my career. Through Miami Street Medicine, an organization of medical students, I serve as a mentor and participate in street rounds which contrast to my role as inpatient clinical educator. This innovative and hands on approach has allowed me to build trust with patients who are often hesitant to seek care due to past negative experiences with the traditional healthcare system. At Doctors Within Borders, I work alongside other dedicated healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive urgent care and social care/case management services that also address social determinant health. This aligns with our goal to reduce costs on our health system while improving outcomes of medical and mental health problems. Managing a wide range of health conditions has reinforced my commitment to healthcare equity and informed my approach to clinical practice and research. My dedication to serving vulnerable populations is rooted in a deep sense of empathy and social justice given my experience. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the barriers to healthcare faced by individuals and have inspired me to advocate for systemic changes to improve access to care. My research interest has led me to interventional science with aims to improve compliance with psychiatric and medical treatments. -
