Biography
Dr. Joseph J. Villavicencio is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, specializing in breast imaging. He provides patient care across the University of Miami Health System, including Jackson Memorial Medical Center, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and University of Miami Hospital.
Dr. Villavicencio earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, graduating cum laude from the University of Florida, before pursuing his medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He completed a transitional year at Broward Health Medical Center, where he was named Resident of the Year, followed by a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System. During residency, he served as Chief Resident and received multiple distinctions, including Best Resident Awards in musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, cardiothoracic, and vascular interventional radiology. To further refine his expertise, he completed a fellowship in breast imaging at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
His academic work includes publications in the European Journal of Radiology and the RSNA Case Collection, with topics spanning prostate MRI quality assessment, male breast cancer, lead poisoning, and cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis. He has presented his research at major national and international meetings, including the ARRS Annual Meeting, the AUR Annual Meeting, and the ACR Annual Meeting. His scholarly contributions also include ongoing multi-center research on contrast-enhanced mammography, with a manuscript under review in Radiology.
Dr. Villavicencio is an active member of the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Breast Imaging. His research and clinical interests focus on optimizing breast cancer detection, integrating advanced imaging technologies into clinical workflows, and enhancing multidisciplinary collaboration in oncologic care.
At the University of Miami, Dr. Villavicencio is committed to advancing breast imaging through both clinical innovation and medical education. He plays a vital role in training radiology residents and fellows, emphasizing diagnostic accuracy, patient-centered care, and teamwork in academic radiology.
His early career reflects a dedication to excellence in both patient care and scholarship, marked by honors such as the Algernon B. Jackson Scholarship at Sidney Kimmel Medical College and election to Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Florida. With a strong foundation in clinical practice and research, Dr. Villavicencio continues to contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Radiology and to the advancement of women’s imaging in South Florida. -

Dr. Villavicencio’s research interests span a variety of topics within radiology, including musculoskeletal imaging, breast cancer, and the use of imaging in multidisciplinary tumor boards. He has contributed to multiple publications and oral presentations in these areas, with a focus on improving clinical practices and diagnostic accuracy.
