  • Biography

Dr. José R. Torrealba is a physician-scientist and academic pathologist specialized in Thoracic, Renal and Transplantation Pathology whose career has been dedicated to advancing the understanding of transplantation pathology, immunology, and precision medicine. He currently serves as Professor of Pathology at the University of Miami, Florida, where he combines clinical service with research and academic work.

Dr. Torrealba’s research has defined key mechanisms of antibody-mediated rejection in kidney, pancreas, and lung transplantation, helping shape international standards through his active role in the Banff consensus process. His work bridges clinical pathology with molecular immunology, introducing diagnostic tools and mechanistic insights that have influenced how rejection, fibrosis, and repair are diagnosed and managed worldwide.

As a principal investigator and collaborator in major NIH-funded studies — including the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) — Dr. Torrealba integrates histopathology with advanced molecular and single-cell approaches to unravel injury and repair pathways in kidney disease. He has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as American Journal of Transplantation, Journal of Immunology, Circulation, and Nature Communications.

Beyond his research, Dr. Torrealba is a committed educator and mentor, having guided numerous medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty toward successful careers in medicine and science. He also serves on national and international committees, editorial boards, and consensus groups, contributing his expertise to shape the future of pathology and transplantation medicine.
