Biography
Dr. Potter is a Professor of Clinical Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, with joint appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and School of Nursing. She serves as Vice Chair of Research for the Division of Reproductive Sciences, and Chief of the Women’s HIV Service. As Chief of the Women’s HIV Service, Dr. Potter manages and directs one of the largest clinical programs for women living with HIV/AIDS (~ 1,500 patients). She has a successful foundation in project leadership through her current role as the PI for the HRSA-funded Ryan White Care Act Part C program, an HIV care and treatment program for adults living in Miami-Dade County and as PI for two Department of Justice funded grants in support of the THRIVE Clinic, a multidisciplinary one-stop shop model of care for survivors of human trafficking. Research has also been an integral part of Dr. Potter’s academic career. As an Investigator on multiple federally funded research projects, Dr. Potter has contributed to some of the most significant research affecting women’s health in the last century. When the HIV/AIDS epidemic emerged in the maternal-child population in South Florida, Dr. Potter participated in the first NIH/NICHD Phase I Clinical Trial of AZT in pregnancy (ACTG 082) followed by the ACTG 076 trial, the landmark study that demonstrated an effective method to prevent HIV transmission from mother to child. UM enrolled one of the largest cohorts for this study worldwide, and Dr. Potter played a significant role in that process. She also served as an Investigator on the NIH sponsored Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which changed the management of menopausal women and the use of hormone therapy and as a Co-Investigator on the multi-site NIH Sponsored National Hispanic Study (HSOL) where her responsibilities included adjudication of all pregnancies in our local cohort. Dr. Potter currently also serves as Co-PI for the NCI sponsored ANCHOR study, a multiple site clinical trial to investigate anal cancer prevention in people living with HIV and as Co-PI for the NICHD Sponsored STAR (Study of Treatment and Reproductive Outcomes) HIV Women’s cohort designed address the effect of HIV on 2,000 reproductive age women representative of the Southern epidemic. With her clinical nursing and research expertise, Dr. Potter has designed, directed, and successfully implemented innovative models of care to serve the unique medical and psychosocial needs of women throughout their lifespan, with particular emphasis on low income, vulnerable populations. Dr. Potter designs models of care to improve opportunities for patients to access clinical care and participate in clinical research. She has served as an investigator and collaborator for the past 35 years, supporting investigators to design and conduct clinical research. -
