Biography
John Byrnes, M.D., is Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Hematology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, with clinical expertise in benign hematology, thrombotic disorders, and hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Byrnes earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. he then completed his residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. John J. Byrnes is a physician–scientist with longstanding expertise in hematology, oncology, and the enzymology of DNA replication. His career is distinguished by dual foundational contributions in clinical hematology and molecular biology. He is recognized both for establishing plasma infusion as the first effective therapy for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)—based on the concept of a missing plasma factor later identified as ADAMTS13—and for pioneering work in DNA polymerase proofreading. His current research integrates these biochemical insights into a unifying framework linking cellular energy metabolism to genomic stability and carcinogenesis. -
