Biography
John Byrnes, M.D., is Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Hematology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, with clinical expertise in benign hematology, thrombotic disorders, and hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Byrnes earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. he then completed his residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Byrnes is dedicated to medical education and the mentorship of fellows and residents. His research interests span thrombosis, bleeding disorders, and advances in hematologic therapies. His most significant contributions include studies on how DNA is copied and how chemotherapy agents work, groundbreaking approaches to treating blood clotting and bleeding disorders such as TTP, ITP, and von Willebrand disease, and the clinical application of bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. He has also made a wide range of important clinical observations that have advanced the field of classical hematology. -
