Biography
Dr. Joel Fishman is a Professor of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. He previously served as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Radiology (2005–2021) and held multiple leadership roles, including Medical Director of UM Radiology Satellite Services and the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Fishman earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his radiology residency and chief residency at UCLA, followed by a fellowship in body imaging at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Board-certified in diagnostic radiology, he is recognized internationally for his expertise in thoracic and cardiac imaging, particularly in the areas of pulmonary infections in immunocompromised patients, cardiovascular CT and MRI, and stem cell therapies for cardiopulmonary disease.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Fishman has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, multiple book chapters, and numerous scientific abstracts and exhibits. His research has been continuously funded by the NIH and other national organizations, with recent studies focusing on cardiovascular complications of infectious diseases, lung cancer screening, and cell-based therapies for heart failure. He has served on editorial boards for major journals, including Journal of Thoracic Imaging and AJR, and has been honored with awards such as the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award and multiple recognitions from the Radiological Society of North America and Society of Thoracic Radiology.
Through his clinical expertise, research, and leadership, Dr. Fishman has made lasting contributions to cardiothoracic imaging and remains dedicated to advancing patient care, education, and innovation in radiology. -
