Biography
Javier Tomás Solera Rallo, M.D., MSc, Ph.D. candidate, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a member of the Miami Transplant Institute. He is a physician specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, with advanced training in transplant and immunocompromised host infectious diseases.
Dr. Solera received his medical degree from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid, a national referral center with a high-volume heart and solid organ transplant program. During residency, he developed a strong interest in complex infections, infective endocarditis, and infections in immunocompromised patients, and actively participated in multidisciplinary endocarditis and thromboembolic disease teams.
He subsequently pursued advanced subspecialty training through a two-year combined clinical and research fellowship in Transplant and Onco-Hematology Infectious Diseases at the Ajmera Transplant Institute, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Canada. During this period, he was appointed Chief Fellow and was extensively involved in the care of solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. In parallel, he completed a Master of Science in Health Sciences Research Methods, along with additional postgraduate training in biostatistics. He is currently finalizing a PhD focused on the optimization of COVID-19 prevention and treatment strategies in solid organ transplant recipients.
Dr. Solera’s research program focuses on infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts, with particular emphasis on transplant infectious diseases, viral respiratory infections, cytomegalovirus prevention, SARS-CoV-2 immunity, and the application of immune-based tools to personalize prophylaxis and treatment strategies. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Clinical Infectious Diseases, American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, and Nature Communications. His work has been recognized with multiple international awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the American Transplant Congress.
In addition to his academic role, Dr. Solera has held leadership positions in antimicrobial stewardship and has extensive experience teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. He regularly serves as a peer reviewer for leading infectious diseases and transplant journals and is an active member of international professional societies.
His clinical and academic interests are centered on improving outcomes in transplant recipients and other immunocompromised populations through evidence-based, personalized infectious diseases care.
