I received my medical school training both at Temple University School of Medicine and UCLA, where I received my MD degree. My Pediatric Residency was commenced at UCLA and completed at Boston Children's Hospital. I received my Neonatology training at the Joint Program in Neonatology (Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital, Boston).
I began my academic career at University of Miami School of Medicine where I began as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 1982 and progressed to Professor of Pediatrics with Tenure. My laboratory research focused on animal models of lung development, specifically the antioxidant enzymes, for which I received grants from the American Lung Association and March of Dimes.
My clinical research consisted, in part, of two large clinical trials, the first, funded by the March of Dimes, on whether early administration of IV lipid could protect premature infants from developing chronic lung disease and the second investigating whether early vs. late administration of ibuprofen for PDA could protect against chronic lung disease in premature infants.
I have published 56 peer-reviewed articles, 17 chapters, and have numerous presentations at national and international meetings.
