Biography
Ian Joseph Bishop MD, MPH, is double board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Complex Family Planning. He received his undergraduate degree in Comparative Politics from Yale University in 2007. He was a Fulbright-Hays scholar with the U.S. Department of State and focused on developing women’s health services in East Africa, partnering with international NGOs and local Departments of Health to develop sustainable interventions. He completed medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he also completed a Master's of Public Health in Maternal/Child Health. He completed his residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, serving as the administrative chief resident from 2016-2017, and then a Complex Family Planning fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY.
His clinical focus is contraception for women with medical comorbidities, the management of pregnancy loss, and abortion care. He provides compassionate and evidence-based care for people when they need birth control, as well as when they face unexpected pregnancy complications and need abortion care or miscarriage management.
Dr. Bishop’s research has focused on understanding drug/drug interactions with contraception for women living with HIV in Southern Africa to ensure access to safe, and effective, contraceptive methods.
He currently serves as the inaugural Director of the Division of Complex Family Planning for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Miami. He also serves as the Associate Program Director for the Residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He spends a significant amount of time educating medical students, residents, and fellows on evidence-based options counseling, comprehensive family planning, and abortion care. -
