Biography
Dr. Hilit Mechaber is the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM). A distinguished alumna of the UM BS/MD Honors Program in Medicine, Dr. Mechaber completed her residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the George Washington University.
Dr. Mechaber's professional expertise lies in medical student career development, coaching, and support. In her current role, she designs and manages programs and resources that support medical students' advancement and career guidance. Her dedication to student well-being and career development has established her as a national leader in student affairs. She has been instrumental in the curricular integration of a robust, longitudinal career advising program that is the hallmark of the UMMSM student experience. Dr. Mechaber has created innovative programs and resources that enhance the medical student experience from matriculation through graduation, and has mentored hundreds of students throughout her tenure, many of whom are now academic and physician leaders across the country.
Dr. Mechaber's national involvement is extensive. She has contributed her leadership and service to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Student Affairs (GSA) for over a decade, as regional Chairperson, National Committee on Student Affairs Chairperson, and ultimately as National Chair of the GSA. She was recently awarded the 2024 GSA Exemplary Service Award, recognizing her tireless efforts and accomplishments. Dr. Mechaber has also contributed significantly to the Electronic Residency Application System and Careers in Medicine National Advisory Boards. Earlier in her career, Dr. Mechaber also dedicated time and expertise to the Society of General Internal Medicine, focusing on programs that supported students and residents pursuing careers as internal medicine generalists.
Dr. Mechaber has received numerous accolades for her contributions to medical education and student support. She was honored with the 2024 Women in Academic Medicine Excellence in Leadership Award, and previously the 2021 American College of Physicians (ACP) FL Chapter Outstanding Contributions to Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine Award, the 2021 University of Miami Inaugural Luis Glaser Mentorship Award, and the 2020 UMMSM Women in Academic Medicine Excellence in Mentoring Award.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Mechaber values her role as a proud mother of two daughters and the wife of a fellow physician educator/executive. -
