Biography
Dr. Helen Hui-Chou, MD, FACS is double board-certified in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is faculty in the Division of Hand, Peripheral Nerve & Upper Extremity Reconstructive Surgery. She holds a dual appointment with the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery.
She specializes in hand and wrist surgery, with a particular focus on reconstructive microsurgery and peripheral nerve surgery. Her expertise lies in microsurgical reconstruction of the upper and lower extremities, and she offers a wide range of upper extremity surgical procedures, including fracture repair, CMC arthritis, trigger finger release, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, ulnar nerve transfer, vascular reconstruction, congenital hand reconstruction, peripheral nerve reconstruction, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), and orthoplastic extremity reconstruction.
Dr. Hui-Chou received her undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University. She then went on to accept a commission as an Officer in the United States Navy. She served 6 years active duty as an ICU nurse at Naval bases including Bethesda, MD, Camp Lejeune, NC, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Dr. Hui-Chou received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins/ University of Maryland Integrated Plastic Surgery program. During her residency, she participated in clinical facial and bilateral hand transplantation programs at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center and Johns Hopkins Hospital, respectively.
She then completed the prestigious Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center at the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.
She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. She is involved in the education and training of Orthopedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery residents and Hand Surgery Fellows.
Dr. Helen Hui-Chou, MD, FACS is the Department of Orthopaedics’ first Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). She has made great strides for the Department and the educational program. The newly formed Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) committee includes faculty, staff, and resident members. -
