Biography
Dr. Gregory E. Holt is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Miami and the Miami VA Medical Center. He earned both his MD and PhD in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from Loyola University Chicago. His graduate research, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. W. Martin Kast, focused on developing dendritic cell vaccines targeting PSA for prostate cancer. Dr. Holt completed his Internal Medicine residency at Georgetown University, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident, followed by a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Washington. There, he worked with Dr. M. (Nora) Disis on DNA-based vaccines targeting IGFBP-2 for ovarian, breast, and lung cancers.
Clinically, Dr. Holt specializes in the evaluation of abnormal chest imaging and lung cancer, including screening and diagnosis using advanced bronchoscopic techniques such as robotic navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and radial EBUS. He is the local Principal Investigator for the VA’s Lung Precision Oncology Program (LPOP), overseeing multiple clinical trials focused on smoking cessation, biomarkers, and novel treatments for both early- and late-stage lung cancer.
His clinical research explores the role of PET-CT imaging in evaluating pulmonary nodules, with an emphasis on incorporating artificial intelligence to improve risk stratification on chest CT scans. His translational research centers on enhancing the lung cancer tumor microenvironment using pro-inflammatory adjuvants that activate dendritic cells via CD40 crosslinking, using circular RNA and nanoparticle delivery technology.
Outside of academia, Dr. Holt is the founder of the lung cancer advocacy group LungCancerKiltsResearchCures.org and serves as a consultant to the Miami Zoo. -
