Biography
A native of Rome, Italy, Prof Iacobellis received his MD degree cum laude in 1994 from the University of Roma, La Sapienza; he was a Research Fellow at the Centrum for Metabolism & Endocrinology, Karolinska University, Stockholm, Sweden in 1999; he became Specialist in Endocrinology in 2000 and obtained his PhD in Endocrinology, Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disorders in 2004.
In 2004, Dr Iacobellis was then an invited Post-doctoral Clinical Research Fellow at the Center for Human Nutrition, South-Western Medical Center, University of Texas, Dallas, USA. In 2005 he moved to Canada as Clinical Research Fellow in the Cardiovascular Obesity Research & Management Department, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.
Since 2006 to May 2010 Dr Iacobellis was appointed Associate Professor of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, McMaster University and Director of Bariatric Endocrinology at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In 2010 he accepted an offer from the University of Miami, FL, USA as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, and Director of the ACC Diabetes Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami.
In 2013 Dr Iacobellis was promoted Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the University of Miami Hospital Diabetes Service.
Gianluca was Silver and Bronze Medalist at the Italian Swimming Youth championships in 1984 and 1985
Gianluca is married with Matilde PhD Biologist in Aquaculture and we have twin daughters, Lavinia & Lucrezia -

Teaching Interests
Dr Iacobellis ' philosophy of education is to engage the learner by teaching science-based medicine and emphasizing the humanistic aspects of patient care. Disseminating research findings and translating them into the clinical practice has played a key role in his educational activity.
He authored several practical textbooks such “Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease” by Oxford University Press, “Cardiovascular Obesity” for the textbook Obesity: Science to Practice, published by Wiley-Blackwell, and more recently “Epicardial Adipose Tissue: from Cell to Clinic” published by Springer Nature, meant to be a practical manuals for a broad readership, from the clinical endocrinologist to the medical students. -
Research Interests
Prof Iacobellis pioneered the research in the epicardial fat and invented the echocardiographic epicardial fat quantification as new marker of visceral fat and therapeutic target.
He is considered the world-wide leading expert in the epicardial fat, a new cardio-metabolic risk factor.
Iacobellis showed that epicardial fat can contribute to cause and predict major cardiovascular diseases. Epicardial fat can serve as modifiable risk factor and target in cardio-metabolic diseases. Prof Iacobellis' research has a number of novel concepts and an innovative methodology with immediate and important clinical application.
As today, Prof Iacobellis has authored 145 scientific articles and 11 textbooks with a current h index of 55 and more than 13000 citations. He has published in top-ranked journals such as Nature Endocrinology, Nature Cardiology, Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, European Heart Journal, JAMA, JCEM. He is co-principal investigator of NIH funded R01 clinical trials on the role of epicardial fat in coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation. -
