Dr. Gabriel Ruiz was born in Bogota, Colombia. After obtaining his medical degree at the National University of Colombia he emigrated to the United States. He was certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and completed his residency at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, which is affiliated with Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Ruiz completed his training with fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the Ryder Trauma Center and the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL where he was recruited as attending for the Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care where he currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery.
Currently, he serves as the medical director of the Trauma Resuscitation Unit at the Ryder Trauma Center, an ACS-verified Level 1 trauma adult and pediatric trauma center, is a full-time faculty for the surgery clerkship of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, the Surgery Residency program and the Trauma Surgery / Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program where he also serves as the Chair of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program evaluation committee.
Dr. Ruiz is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has been appointed to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, received the prestigious George Paff Award for excellence in medical education, and many other teaching awards, and has published extensively in the field of Surgery and Critical Care. Dr. Ruiz Lives in Miami, FL with his wife Nizme, and his two children, Sara and Sofia.
