Biography
Gabriel Contreras, MD, MPH, earned his medical degree in 1984 from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. He trained in Internal medicine, nephrology, hypertension, critical care, and earned a degree as Master in Public Health between 1989 and 2003. In 1996, Dr. Contreras joined the School of Medicine at the University of Miami. He has been involved in the development and establishment of a successful clinical research program in the Division of Nephrology with the accrual of 33 research grants, 109 publications in peer review Journals, and 6 Chapters publications in textbooks. In the 25 years of his academic career, He has kept research funding from different sources such as the Kidney Foundation of South Florida, the Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study (VACS) Program, the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Pharmaceutical Industry. Dr. Contreras has an ongoing commitment to improving kidney disease outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities throughout the clinical research program at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. This is evidenced in part by maintaining funding for the University of Miami as a key site in the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK) trial-cohort, a multi-center, NIH-funded study of risk factors for the prevention and treatment of kidney disease progression among African Americans. Also participated as the site Principal Investigator of five other important multicenter trials, the ambulatory blood pressure study in the AASK cohort, and the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) funded by the NIH programs. -
