Dr. Fernando Martinez, MD, MScPH, is a Professor of Clinical Pathology in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, followed by a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of South Carolina. He completed residency and fellowship training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Medical Microbiology, Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, and Chemical Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Board-certified in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Martinez specializes in transfusion medicine, hemovigilance, and patient blood management.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Martinez has made impactful contributions to clinical practice, education, and research. His top accomplishments include serving as Fellowship Program Director in Laboratory Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center for over a decade, leading national and international research on transfusion safety and hemovigilance with numerous peer-reviewed publications, and chairing multiple patient blood management committees to advance best practices in oncology and transfusion medicine. Through his leadership, scholarship, and mentorship of residents and fellows, Dr. Martinez continues to shape innovations in transfusion medicine and advance patient care.
