Biography
Fernando Collado-Mesa, MD, FSBI, received his medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, and completed a residency in Medical Epidemiology at the National School of Public Health, Havana, Cuba. He is a former Public Health Research Fellow, at the Pan American Health Organization, and a former Academic Visitor at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London, England. After migrating to the United States, he successfully met all requirements, including USMLE steps, and obtained ECFMG certification. He then successfully applied for and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, followed by a breast imaging radiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Florida. He joined the Department of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in July 2010. In 2023 he was promoted to the academic rank of Professor of Clinical Radiology. In recognition of his level of expertise and his dedication to the field of breast imaging radiology, Dr. Collado-Mesa was inducted as a fellow of the Society of Breast Imaging. He has participated, presented, and lectured at numerous local, national, and international meetings and is the author of multiple scientific publications. He is passionate about patient care, medical education, and research. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Collado-Mesa's teaching interests encompass all aspects of breast imaging radiology, including, mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI, as they pertain to both malignant and benign breast diseases. His teaching interests also include clinical applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to radiology in general and breast imaging radiology in particular. Dr. Collado-Mesa teaches medical students, diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology residents, breast imaging fellows, breast surgical oncology fellows, and breast pathology fellows. -
Research Interests
Dr. Collado-Mesa is Associate Vice Chair of Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethical Use at the Department of Radiology, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His research interests include artificial intelligence and machine learning in breast imaging radiology, health disparities in breast cancer, and the detection and reporting of breast arterial calcifications in mammography as a risk indicator of cardiovascular disease. He previously conducted research in the fields of epidemiology and public health aspects of viral hepatitis, HIV, diabetes mellitus, Parkinson's disease, and skin cancer. -
