Biography
Dr. Efrosyni Sfakianaki is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology in the Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Board-certified in radiology and nuclear medicine, she brings more than two decades of expertise in molecular imaging, oncologic imaging, and advanced nuclear medicine applications.
Dr. Sfakianaki earned her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 1998 before completing an internal medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. She subsequently pursued a combined five-year residency and fellowship program in radiology and nuclear medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial, where she served as Chief Resident in Nuclear Medicine.
Since joining the faculty in 2006, Dr. Sfakianaki has built a career that integrates clinical excellence, education, and research. She has served in key leadership roles, including Director of the Nuclear Medicine Residency Program (2013–2018) and as a distinguished faculty member at the University of Miami’s Center for Cognitive Neuroscience & Aging (CNSA) since 2019. She remains active on departmental and institutional committees, contributing to faculty recruitment, quality improvement, and incentive planning.
Her research and scholarship have focused on renal scintigraphy, gastric emptying studies, PET/CT applications in oncology, and molecular imaging in neurology. She has co-authored peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including The Lancet Oncology, Seminars in Nuclear Medicine, Urology, and the Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine. She has also contributed book chapters on nuclear imaging in cerebral palsy, pediatric neuroimaging, and brain tumor imaging. Her funded research collaborations include NIH- and state-sponsored studies on Alzheimer’s disease, brain amyloid load, and cognitive testing in diverse populations, as well as clinical trials of targeted therapies in sarcomas and cervical cancer.
Dr. Sfakianaki has been recognized with multiple awards and honors, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Outstanding Paper Award. She is frequently invited to lecture nationally on PET/CT, SPECT/CT, renal scintigraphy, and theranostic applications in oncology.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Sfakianaki has trained generations of medical students, residents, and fellows at the University of Miami. She delivers didactic lectures, board review sessions, and daily case-based instruction in the reading room, with a teaching focus on nuclear imaging techniques, oncologic PET/CT, and renal scintigraphy.
At the University of Miami, Dr. Sfakianaki continues to advance the field of nuclear medicine through her clinical expertise, translational research, and mentorship, playing a vital role in shaping the next generation of nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists. -
