Biography
Eduardo Alfonso, M.D. is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College and Medical School. Following his training at the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Harvard Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, he has been a physician, endowed professor, researcher, and leader in health care administration. As director of Bascom Palmer since 2007, the Institute has been ranked the number one eye hospital in the United States each year by U.S. News & World Report and has continually been recognized as having the best residency program in ophthalmology by Doximity.com. An internationally recognized expert on ocular infectious diseases, in 2006 he documented an increase in the incidence of an aggressive form of fungal corneal infections related to soft contact lens use. He is also well known for his expertise in transplants of the cornea, and clinical applications of keratoprosthesis. He has been an invited lecturer in over 200 national and international meetings, delivered 22 named lectureships, served on the editorial board of ophthalmology journals, and has authored more than 300 scientific publications. Dr. Alfonso has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Honor, Senior Achievement, Life Achievement, and Special Recognition Awards; been named the Pan American Ophthalmological Foundation Ambassador for Education; and received the Florida Society of Ophthalmology Leadership Award. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Ophthalmological Society, the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationale, and the University of Miami Iron Arrow Society. He is listed in the Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors in the United States, and The Ophthalmologist 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists Power List. He has served as director and president of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, Heed Ophthalmic Foundation, Miami Ophthalmological Society, Bascom Palmer Alumni Association, Sociedad Iberoamericana de Cornea, Cuban Ophthalmological Society, Ophthalmology Research Foundation, and Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group. He has served on the board of the Society of Heed Fellows, Cornea Society, International Council of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Foundation, and Florida Society of Ophthalmology. He was the founder of the Cornea and External Disease Academic Society. He has also served in important leadership positions at the University of Miami, including search committees for the Provost and Executive Vice President (chair), the President, and numerous department chairs. He has served on scientific boards for industry, National Eye Institute, Hope for Vision, Prevent Blindness America, Alcon Research Institute, and Research to Prevent Blindness. He was appointed by the Secretary of Health & Human Services to serve on the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Advisory Eye Council. -
