Biography
Dr. Jayaweera is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami. He received his M.D. degree from Sri Lanka and trained in Sri Lanka, Great Britain, and Loyola University of Chicago. He came to the University of Miami as an assistant professor of medicine. He was promoted to a full professor by 2006. Subsequently, he became the Associate Vice Provost for Human Subject Protection at the University of Miami and finally the Dean for Research for a few years.
He was the first to create an HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) co-infection clinic at the University of Miami in 2000. When the ZIKA epidemic began, he initiated studies on ZIKA at the University of Miami in 2018, and finally, he pivoted to COVID-19 in 2020. Over the last 20 years, he has received research funding from the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation and Industry for HIV, HCV, and COVID-19. He is the contact PI for the Janssen Vaccine study for covid-19 funded by BARDA, the NIH-sponsored ACTIV-6 study, and many industry-sponsored studies related to COVID-19. In addition, he was the PI of numerous trials associated with hepatitis C, with publications in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). He has been an HIV treater and a translational researcher for almost thirty years. He initiated a program at the University of Miami Tower Hospital to test all the patients arriving at the emergency department to mitigate the HIV epidemic called the “Frontlines of Communities in the U.S.” (FOCUS) Program.
He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and over 110 scientific abstracts.
Furthermore, some of his publications are in high-impact journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the New England Journal of Medicine. Furthermore, he is an investigator at the NIH-sponsored Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute. He is a member of the One Florida Research consortium, with over 20 million medical records available for research. He is an internationally known speaker on HIV and COVID-19.
Apart from his academic work, he has done many disaster relief work and volunteered in Sri Lanka after the tsunami in 2004, in Honduras after Hurricane Mitch, and in Haiti after the earthquake. He has also volunteered to work in Chincha, Peru. -
