Teaching Interests
I have been involved in training medical students, residents, medical fellows, and junior faculty for over 30 years. I have personally trained a total of 86 persons, including 19 postdoctoral fellows. My teaching evaluations have always reflected a high level of satisfaction with my teaching style and enthusiasm for the overall experience. Though my training practicums have had a clinical focus many of my trainees have coauthored scientific abstracts and papers with me. Upon coming to UM I developed an Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN) training program for fellows in neuropsychology, the first such program at UM. I have since assisted the Department of Psychiatry in forming their own APPCN program, and I continue to serve as a training faculty for their program.
In addition to psychology teaching and training, I have actively participated in training of my medical colleagues. I have provided numerous didactic lectures to physiatry residents and others. I am also a regular participant in continuing medical education activities. I have presented lectures, seminars, and demonstrations at numerous educational conferences, and have chaired and co-chaired several topical sessions. I have been invited to present at national meetings of professional and scientific societies. -
Research Interests
Throughout my academic career I have emphasized a clinician-scholar approach to my work and have sought to advance science on matters of clinical relevance. My primary research focus has been on assessment and treatment issues in persons with brain injury and illness, the adverse effects of alcohol abuse and hazardous drinking, and professional issues and ethics in psychology.
I have developed guidelines and standards of practice in my specialty. Several of my papers are recommended readings for board examination is neuropsychology and are commonly assigned readings in graduate level courses in psychology, which speaks to the importance of these writings. For example, I first to write about the role of informed consent in neuropsychological practice to address the shortcomings of current ethical standards in achieving true informed consent. I attained recognition as an expert on informed consent practices, which has culminated in being asked to promulgate informed consent guidelines for the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Reflecting my growing interest in research with cognitive impaired persons, I most recently published guidelines for research consent in persons with traumatic brain injury.
To date I have 125 publications. I am particularly proud of being included as an author in the three leading text books that cover my areas of expertise: Morgan & Ricker (Eds.) Handbook of Clinical Neuropsychology; Rosenthal & Caplan (Eds.) Handbook of Rehabilitation Psychology, and Braddom (Ed.) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. My writings are among the suggested readings for those preparing for board examination. My current work focuses on a forthcoming book on Medical Psychology which I am co-editing with Dr. Cady Block from Emory University. -
