Biography
Dr. Musselman received a BS degree in physics and chemistry from Stetson University in 1984, and her MD degree from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine in 1989. After completing her psychiatry residency at Emory University in 1993, she was subsequently awarded a 3-year research fellowship in Neuroendocrinology sponsored by the NIDDK. In 1997 she received a Mentored Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, and in 2000, a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from Emory University. Her R01 funding has included an award from the NHBLI to investigate abnormal platelet physiology of patients with major depression, and from the NIMH, awards to understand and treat the adverse impact of depression in African American patients with type 2 diabetes, and the mechanisms and treatment of IL-2-induced depression, respectively. Active in the teaching and mentoring of many young physician scientists, she developed the Evidence-Based Psychiatry resident course at Emory, and was Director of the grant-writing course of the Emory Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Her awards include the Emory Junior Faculty “Outstanding Educator” award in Psychiatry (1997), the Gerard Klerman Young Investigator Award (1999), and in 2003, the Herbert Weiner Early Career Award for contributions to psychosomatic medicine. Dr. Musselman’s over 100 publications include papers or book chapters which focus upon the pathophysiology underlying the major mood disorders, and the impact of psychiatric disorders and their treatment upon health and human behavior. She is currently a senior member of the Adult Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service at Jackson Memorial Hospital and a member of the Sylvester Cancer Center of the University of Miami. -
