Biography
Dr. Dipen J. Parekh is a globally renowned urologic oncologist, healthcare innovator, and leader in academic medicine. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of its UHealth-University of Miami Health System and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Miami and on June 1, 2025. He is also the Founding Director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute and an accomplished researcher and professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine who holds the Victor A. Politano Endowed Chair and the Magnier Endowed Chair in Urology. Dr. Parekh is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of robotic-assisted urologic oncology and is the Director of Robotic Surgery for the health system. Even in his CEO role, Dr. Parekh remains actively engaged in patient care, continuing to see patients and perform surgery.
Having also served as Chief Operating Officer of UHealth from 2020-2025, Chief Clinical Officer from 2017-2020, Chairman of the Department of Urology since 2012, Executive Dean of Clinical Affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Parekh brings a wealth of academic, clinical, administrative, and institutional experience to the role.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Parekh has performed more than 6,000 robotic urologic cancer surgeries, making him one of the most experienced practitioners worldwide. He led the groundbreaking RAZOR trial, published in The Lancet in 2018, which established the efficacy of robotic-assisted radical cystectomy as comparable to open surgery for bladder cancer. He is an NCI-funded surgeon scientist with over 200 peer reviewed publications in urologic oncology. His dedication to innovation has also included establishing advanced robotic surgery programs in academic centers across the globe.
Dr. Parekh’s leadership has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious American Urological Association’s Gold Cystoscope Award in 2013 for his exceptional contributions to urologic oncology and robotic surgery. He has been inducted into elite organizations such as the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, where he was awarded the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeon’s Barringer Medal, and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, recognizing his significant impact on the field. In 2024, he was inducted into the Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL), honoring his pioneering efforts in integrating technology into surgical practices and advancing healthcare management.
In his role as COO of UHealth, Dr. Parekh oversaw operations, ambulatory strategy, and performance improvement initiatives. During his tenure, he was instrumental in enhancing clinical efficiency, improving patient outcomes, and aligning strategic priorities for one of the nation’s leading academic health systems. His contributions have been nationally recognized, with Becker’s Hospital Review naming him among the top 60 academic health system COOs to know in 2024.
Dr. Parekh’s vision and expertise extend beyond his clinical and leadership roles. As a mentor and educator, he has trained countless surgeons and healthcare leaders, shaping the next generation of innovators in urology and healthcare.
