Diego Avella-Patino, M.D.

Dr. Avella Patino is double board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery. He specializes in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases in the chest, including lungs, esophagus, pleura chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum. He is experienced in all techniques of lung and esophageal resection with expertise in robotic surgery.

Dr. Avella Patino takes a holistic approach to teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, emphasizing patient care through hands on training in both clinical and surgical settings. He endeavors to individualize his teaching methods to meet the needs and objectives of each trainee. Dr. Avella Patino’s goal is to equip trainees with the appropriate skills, knowledge, and attitude necessary to obtain the best outcomes for their patients.

Dr. Avella Patino’s research is focused on the development of methods to combine non-surgical therapies with surgery to optimize the outcomes of patient cancer treatments. His concentration is in cancer immunology with a particular interest in T cells.
