Biography
David Lee, PhD, has been a faculty member in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 1990. He is a chronic disease and occupational epidemiologist with sustained funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1993 as a principal or co–principal investigator.
Dr. Lee also serves as principal investigator of the Florida Cancer Data System, the second-largest state cancer registry in the United States. He has authored or coauthored more than 275 peer-reviewed publications. His research teams include students who contribute to scholarly work, including student-led publications in public health and biomedical journals.
A central focus of Dr. Lee’s research is reducing health disparities. His current research interests include the use of mind-body approaches for the prevention and management of stress and chronic disease, improving workforce health in the United States, cancer surveillance and prevention, and sensory impairment surveillance. -
Teaching Interests
Dr. Lee has taught graduate courses in the Department of Public Health Science since 1992 and currently is course director for Health Policy. He also developed and launched a first-of-its kind course in Mindfulness in Public Health and Medicine that combined didactic and experiential training on the use of mind-body techniques to manage the stressors associated with modern life. Dr. Lee has mentored many doctoral students, fellows and junior faculty as well as high school students over his 30+ years at the University of Miami. Students and junior faculty have served as lead authors for approximately one-quarter of the 275+ publications by Dr. Lee. He has served as a K-grant mentor and sponsor for a number of F30/F31-supported students as well as serving on 30+ PhD dissertation committees, 14 as committee Chair. Dr. Lee’s training and mentorship philosophy is grounded in the promotion of inclusive, safe and supportive research environments that values each trainee’s skills, interests, and values. -
Research Interests
Dr. Lee is a chronic disease epidemiologist with interest in the areas of tobacco use/prevention, cancer risk, the epidemiology of hearing and vision disorders, occupational health, and the application of mind-body practices in those living with chronic conditions or working in high stress occupations. He has published nearly 300 collaborative publications in the peer reviewed literature, has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 1993. While still a graduate student, Dr. Lee developed an interest in the health of Hispanics that he has maintained throughout his career. He played a role in the competitive selection of the University of Miami as one of four centers for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Hispanic Community Health Study- (HCHS-SOL), which is the largest population-based multi-disciplinary epidemiologic study ever undertaken in US Latinos. He currently serves as a co-Principal investigator for SOL OJOS, an HCHS-SOL ancillary study that is documenting the prevalence and risk factor associations for major eye diseases. -
