Biography
Daniel Diaz, PhD, is a research assistant professor in the Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at the University of Miami. He earned his doctorate in probability from the University of São Paulo in Brazil and a bachelor’s degree in statistics, with minors in mathematics and biostatistics, from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Facultad de Teología y Estudios Religiosos in Colombia and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in science and religion at Biola University.
Dr. Diaz’s research is interdisciplinary and examines the role of information in complex systems, drawing on probability, statistics, and machine learning, with strong grounding in philosophy. His work spans multiple scientific domains, including fine-tuning of the constants of nature in cosmology; theories of learning in psychology and philosophy; bump hunting in machine learning; large deviations and percolation in stochastic processes; maximum entropy and active information in information theory; COVID-19 prevalence estimation and forecasting in infectious disease research; population genetics in biology; and the development of hypothesis tests in statistics. -
