Biography
Dr. Katsoufis is an associate professor of clinical pediatrics, who has been in practice for more than 10 years. She currently serves as the medical director of the Pediatric Dialysis of Holtz Children’s Hospital. She has also previously served as the associate program director of the Pediatrics Residency Program. Nationally, she has leadership roles in both the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium (PNRC) and the SCOPE Dialysis Collaborative. Her dedication to research is specifically in the field of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), having also conducted multiple investigative drug trials for novel therapies for children. In addition to caring for all types of pediatric kidney conditions, she provides targeted care in the area of prenatal consultation for congenital kidney disease. -

Research Interests
My primary, investigator-initiated studies focus on the identification of biomarkers of the progression of chronic kidney disease. My interest in the care of children with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) specifically focuses on the predictors and management of chronic kidney disease. It extends throughout the continuum of their disease, from prenatal counseling of parents through the provision of kidney replacement therapy, which has resulted in the scientific study of the prenatal determinants of chronic kidney disease in children with CAKUT, as well as the study of the associated co-morbidities, including cardiovascular and mineral-bone disease in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). -

The purpose of this study is to find out about the safety and efficacy of patiromer (a drug used in adults to treat high potassium in blood) for the treatment of hyperkalaemia (high potassium in blood) in children. In this study, patiromer is investigational as it is not yet approved by health authorities for use in children. Patiromer is approved by several regulatory agencies around the world including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), under the name Veltassa to treat hyperkalaemia in adults.
