Biography
Dr. Christopher Alessia is an assistant professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Miami. He completed his B.S. in nutrition sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He then went on to complete his medical training at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL. He did his internship in internal medicine and residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, IL. His clinical interest revolves around what can be collectively thought of as the neuromusculoskeletal system which combines nonsurgical musculoskeletal care, electrodiagnostic medicine, and prosthetics and orthotics care.
Professionally, he strives to integrate the relevant medical literature into patient care, always staying grounded in the fact that any individual is not a “statistical average.” As such, his philosophy of care aims to integrate the physician’s medical decision-making with the patient’s goals of care to improve function and reduce suffering. Dr. Alessia is passionate about education. As a resident he was involved in organizing lectures for resident didactics, giving lectures to residents and medical students, and developing a journal club. As he transitioned to the role of assistant professor, he developed the curriculum for prosthetics and orthotics for PM&R residents, and lectures on topics related to electrodiagnostic medicine, gait, prosthetics, and orthotics. -
