Biography
I have been the Director of the Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) Respiratory Clinic since 1993 caring for persons co-infected with TB/HIV. I was entrusted with the design and implementation of a new program coordinating care between JMH and the Miami-Dade Department of Health. I have been following HIV infected persons in the JMH Special Immunology clinic since 1992. I have also worked as an attending physician on the JMH in-patient Special Immunology Service.
In September of 2011 I worked as a Tuberculosis Consultant for 2 years at Hopital Universitaire Justinien (HUJ) in Cap-Haitian under a PEPFAR grant. The first interventions included restructuring of the organizational infrastructure with linkages between Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and the laboratory to effect better coordination of care for persons co-infected with TB/HIV. A multitiered educational and training program for TB was developed and implemented. The hospital developed an Infection Control plan, and an IC nurse was recruited and trained. A major programmatic innovation was the introduction of clinical pathways for diagnostic workup and treatment of TB. These instruments allowed for tracking of patients as they go the health care system, which allowed for real time identification of deficiencies and timely strategic interventions. The TB informational system was optimized with the addition of indicators to better clarify existing components and monitor progress of pathways.
Most of my research has focused on evaluating the interactions between TB and HIV medications.
I have been the Principal Investigator on studies evaluating the interactions between TB and HIV medications at the Florida Department of Health TB Hospital and at Instituto Nacional de Infectologia Evandro Chagas (INI) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am currently a Co-PI for a study investigating a novel blood test used for the diagnosis of TB. I am also working on studies evaluating barriers to care for Haitians PLHIV. -
