Biography
Dr. Carolyn Cray was awarded her Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of Miami and subsequently joined the Division of Comparative Pathology in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the Miller School of Medicine. She currently is ranked as a Clinical Professor with a secondary appointment in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. Dr. Cray is the Chief of the Division of Comparative Pathology which hosts two outreach veterinary laboratories as well as providing pathology expertise to researchers as a function of our core laboratory service to the university. The Avian & Wildlife Laboratory was formed in 1993 and provides clinical pathology test services to veterinarians across the United States. Both routine and novel test services are used by veterinarians in private practice, universities, rehabilitation centers, zoological institutions, and aquaria. In 2010, the Acute Phase Protein Laboratory was formed to provide the first venue for acute phase protein testing in animal species in the United States. More information about both laboratories can be seen at www.cpl.med.miami.edu.
She has published over 180 articles and book chapters and over 190 abstracts.

Teaching Interests
In addition to her active clinical research interests, Dr. Cray works with pre-vet undergraduate students and graduate students with projects related to our laboratory interests.
Research Interests
Research interests include models of disease especially with infectious agents such as Aspergillus and Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Many general research studies are closely related to the clinical interests of my laboratory. In addition to interests in infectious disease, we seek to validate and implement acute phase protein and other biomarker assays in avian, exotic, and wildlife species in addition to the more mainstream companion and large animal species. Serum amyloid A, C-reactive protein, and haptoglobin are highly conserved biomarkers that can be exploited across many species lines.
