Dr Gutierrez obtained her doctoral degree in neuroscience from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her early work in basic neuroscience was centered around neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the (primate) visual system. In 2005, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Dr Gutierrez’ professional endeavors shifted abruptly, but fortuitously, towards the field of public health. During that time in Louisiana, Dr Gutierrez applied her skills and training on the statewide implementation and management of large scale, federally funded emergency response programs. These years of professional experience in public health brought Dr Gutierrez to the University of Miami in 2010 to manage the logistics of medical professionals volunteering relief efforts after the earthquake in Haiti. Approaching more than 15 years in Miami and at the U, Dr Gutierrez is proud to be a “Cane”!
