Teaching Interests
Dr. Karp has presented her work on the role of topical chemotherapy and ultra-high resolution OCT in many countries across the world. She is recognized as leader in ocular surface oncology. She has held several courses at the AAO and other meetings to help guide clinicians in the diagnosis and management of ocular surface tumors. Her teaching initiatives include serving on the executive committee of the Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology as the secretary of English language and as the co-director of the Inter-American Course in Clinical Ophthalmology (Curso). Dr. Karp also hosts several Phacoemulsification wet lab courses each year at Bascom Palmer. Dr. Karp in conjunction with Dr. Chris Alabiad, the program director at Bascom Palmer, has spearheaded the “flipped classroom” approach, a teaching curriculum geared towards familiarizing medical students and primary care providers on the fundamentals of clinical ophthalmology. Dr. Karp is invested in the education of medical students, residents and fellows, having mentored many ophthalmologists over the past years. -
Research Interests
A leader in ocular surface oncology, Dr. Karp’s research primarily focuses on the diagnosis and management of ocular surface tumors. Dr. Karp has produced several landmark articles on the topic. Since the late 90’s Dr. Karp has championed the use of topical interferon and 5-Fluorouracil for the treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) with her work signaling a paradigm shift in the management of OSSN. Dr. Karp has also been a trailblazer in the use of ultra-high resolution OCT (UHR-OCT) in the diagnosis of ocular tumors with numerous studies defining the classical features of these tumors. In collaboration with Dr. Sander Dubovy at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Dr. Karp has demonstrated the role of UHR-OCT as an ‘optical biopsy’ with several clinicopathological correlation studies of various conjunctival tumors. Dr. Karp values a team work ethic in her research endeavors, frequently collaborating with various attending at Bascom Palmer, nationally and internationally. -
