Biography
Dr. Carlos Blaschke is a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Director of Clinical Research at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). His academic and professional journey has been devoted as a researcher in type 1 diabetes (T1D) through innovative, interdisciplinary approaches. Trained in both medicine and clinical research, he began his career in Colombia, earning his MD and later joining the University of Miami. Starting as a student in the Thyroid Endocrine Research Laboratory, Dr. Blaschke progressed to Director of Clinical Research at the DRI.
He has extensive experience in the conduction and coordination of multiple type 1 diabetes research projects including the NIH type 1 diabetes TrialNet Research at the University of Miami, including the landmark teplizumab T1D prevention study, which ultimately led to FDA approval. He currently serves as Co-Investigator on several clinical trials focused on the prevention and intervention of T1D.
Mentoring and education have been key aspects of his career. He has trained research nurses in key clinical research procedures, such as metabolic testing, and has been an invited speaker at both national and international forums.
Beyond his research, Dr. Blaschke is actively involved in community outreach. His participation in ADA and Breakthrough-T1D Walks, autoantibody detection initiatives, and educational programs at diabetes camps underscores his commitment to public health and early prevention of type 1 diabetes.
